"A model has lifted the lid on the taboo subject of having her period while walking the runway during London Fashion Week.
Victoria Cain, from Surrey, who has worked with brands such as L'Oreal, Rimmel and Toni & Guy, has opened up about how menstruation affects her ability to do her job – revealing that as there’s so much waiting around ‘leaking is common’.
The 19-year-old, who was first approached by a modelling scout when she was 13, said she first realised working in the industry while having her period could be a problem was when she was on a photoshoot – and she was the only girl.
She said most people fail to see behind the ‘glitz and glamour’ of modelling, and don’t take into account the ‘taboo’ subject of periods.
Victoria, who told the Independent she worries about acne, cravings and bloating as they affect her chances of finding work, said she got a ‘surprise [period] attack in the middle of the day and I had to fake a cigarette break and go to find a shop’.
The 5ft 10inch blonde added that she was stressed about leaking blood on the expensive clothes she was wearing.
Speaking about LFW , Victoria, who has been modelling since she was 16, said that due to the nature of the work, with lots of castings, models can be queuing with ‘hundreds of other girls for long periods of time to be seen for jobs, [it] means that leaking is common’.
She also admitted that her worst nightmare would be leaking on the runway.
She added: ‘I always make sure I tuck my tampon string in when I'm on a job [otherwise it] would be a super embarrassing moment.'
The model isn't the first female professional to open up about working while having a period.
Indian model Aishwarya Sushmita also opened up on the topic - admitting that she can't 'give in' to cravings for junk food as models are 'expected to follow a strict diet during fashion weeks'.
She told India Today: 'The fear of leaking is always there, but you can't do much about it.'
She also added that she feels under pressure to give her best at every job because 'the world is watching', despite her period making her feel 'hapless'.
'I love my job but the bloating, pain and mood swings are not things I claim to enjoy too much. I have a heavy bleeding problem, so using tampons is not something I can afford to risk.'..."
