Well, I wondered how long it would take for the spammers to try again. Immediately, as it turns out!
No problem. Guests may no longer post on ANY of the boards. You must LOG IN to post.
Member requests will be processed within 3 days. Violations of the TOS will result in immediate ban of the member. Of course, that member is free to request membership again. But everything is logged here, so if they violate the TOS a second time I will block their ISP and general geographic area as well.
I'm not the police and I don't like rules, for the most part. But I think clamping (cramping?) down on the BS that can threaten our happy home here is a valid reason to make rules.

I was wondering whether guests might at least be allowed to *view* the board but not post? That way they might get a feel for it before deciding whether they wanted to register and post. As it is, one is apparently now required to log in or register to even view the board, and while this no doubts keeps out some would-be spammers, it also probably keeps out some people who might want to join for legitimate reasons but want to see what the board looks like first.

hey you're right. I didn't see that Registration was checked for ALL visitors. Thanks! I set it so that non-members can see the Forum and read posts, but they cannot reply or start a new thread.
Then I thought, well, that's really not quite right either. So I created a new Board, for Visitors only to post. They can go read a post, and refer to if if they want, on the Visitor's board. This way I get to see if they're a good "fit" for our little puddle of fun, or if they get the boot before they even become a full Member.
I hope that does the trick.

My answer to the poll is one not listed: posts from guests have to be approved by a moderator. Our friend at MenInMenstruation has the ability to approve posts made by guests to his forum. I suspect he receives an email when someone posts, after he logs out of his forum. Might be just once, might be for every post.
SFF still redirects to here. So, I did a test post that simulates what a smut aficionado typically posts. There is a captcha feature that prevents scripts from posting spam, like what used to happen on DCJ. However, for the spammer that wants to spam from scratch rather than buying frozen and just thawing it, we still can have some stuff that violates the TOS. I find pictures of thaw-and-serve bagels (and the bagels themselves) highly offensive. Ess-A-Bagel, 51st. and 3rd.

Spammers want to post on the real forums, not on a fake one. So I still need to approve new members and keep an eye on them. ProBoards does not have the feature that would let me "screen" posts and then put them on the forum. A website can do it better than a BBS apparently. I don't know anything about how it works, all I know is that I can't do it here.

I think you've got the right balance. There are lots of us who may only visit this board occasionally (and who may well have been purged without knowing it) but I guess the only way round it is to pop in more often, be more active and show that we WANT to be here.
