Everyone knows that *Cleopatra* was the most expensive movie made up to that time (1963) and that it was where the love affair of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton blossomed. But here is one thing I didn't know about it:
"Mankiewicz reportedly shuffled shooting schedules to accommodate her menstrual cycle. “We could only shoot Roman scenes in the Senate [which did not involve Taylor] when Elizabeth was having her period,” says Kenneth Haigh, who played Brutus. “She said, ‘Look, if I’m playing the most beautiful woman in the world, I want to look my best.’”

Now *that* is what I call star power! Could any actress get away with that today?

Its documented in various places that Marilyn Monroe would not film during her period. It was also mentioned somewhere that she was spotted in public a few times with menstrual leaks on her clothing.

My understanding is that Marilyn had a "lifetime of painful periods and endometriosis" books.google.com/books?id=aMDABAAAQBAJ&pg=PT30 so it's understandable she wouldn't want to film during her period.
