Stopped at my local service station a few days ago to get some petrol. Most service stations in Australia are as much convenience stores as petrol stations, and of course you have to walk though the store part in order to pay for your petrol. I usually don’t pay much attention to what’s on the shelves, but this time I happened to notice that the “personal care” products had been relocated. As well as the usual panty liners, pads and tampons, I was amazed to see they had Lunette menstrual cups. This is the first time I’ve ever seen cups for sale in a store in Australia, and of all places, it was in a service station! Almost directly opposite the service station is the local chemist shop, so after my discovery, I just had to check out the chemist. The euphemistically named “personal hygiene” aisle has a massive array of different brands of liners, pads and tampons but yes, you’ve guessed it – no menstrual cups. So if you’re an Aussie woman who’s decided to buy a cup, maybe try your local service station, rather than the chemist (lol). Anyway, my discovery leaves me with questions: Who thought I’d be a great idea to stock cups in a service station? How are they going to shift them – maybe a free cup with every $100 worth of fuel??
