I've signed up for alerts from the VM, and I recently got an email about a virtual event, Period Drama! According to the description of the event, it's an opportunity to get "up close and personal with Georgian women and people with vulvas: what they wore, how they washed themselves and their clothes, and how they coped with menstruation, menopause and disease. This event is a collaboration between the Vagina Museum and Jane Austen’s House, tying into their respective exhibitions: Periods: A Brief History and Jane Austen Undressed". This piqued my interest, so I had a look at the Jane Austen House's website, and I found that the Jane Austen Undressed exhibition can be viewed online: janeaustens.house/jane-austen-undressed/. Women who lived during the Regency period didn't wear underwear below the waist, and according to the exhibition: "Without knickers, it was harder for a woman to cope with menstruation. They might wrap a strip of fabric around their hips and wear a muslin napkin looped over the front and back, with stitched 'sanitary pads' lining it, which could be boiled and reused. Alternatively, they might use a homemade tampon fashioned from a smoothed stick, bound in absorbent linen rags and securely stitched". I cant imagine what it would have been like to use something as rigid as a stick as a tampon, even covered by fabric - that doesn't sound comfortable at all!

The VM has a podcast series, and the theme for the second series is periods. The first podcast is women sharing their period stories, and explores "the science behind your cycle". I didn't know that the average cycle length gets shorter with age and the variation of cycle length is greater in women who have a higher BMI. I haven't listened to the whole 30 minute episode yet, but the first 10 minutes are quite interesting. Podcast link: pod.link/1488645205/episode/e5f425a0d9d482309a57d6fc65e80b83
