Australia’s two main supermarkets are Coles and Woolworths. As you’d expect, they sell the usual menstrual products – pads and tampons (including applicator tampons, even though they’re a small percentage of the Australian market). Recently, I’ve noticed that Woolworths has started to stock Diva cups ( divacupglobal.com/en_AU), which as far as I know, is a first for Australian supermarkets. At this stage, Coles hasn’t followed suit, which is a bit of a surprise, considering they are each other’s main competitor. Nevertheless, I’m thinking that being able to buy a menstrual cup while doing the weekly grocery shop could be a game changer, and might lead to a significant increase in the number of women using them.

As I mentioned in my previous post, my local Woolies supermarket started stocking menstrual cups about 18 months ago. Between then and now, when I walk down that aisle, I've seen gaps on the shelf, and my impression was that the cups were selling reasonably well. When I went shopping yesterday, I noticed that the cups are gone - they've been replaced on the shelf by reusable period underwear. Over the last few years, I've seen quite a few articles about the increasing popularity of menstrual cups (like this one, "Why are menstrual cups becoming more popular?": www.bbc.com/news/business-45667020). My Woolies supermarket gives shelf space to a number of menstrual products (for example, Femfresh and applicator tampons) which I think would have a limited market, but it seems that in the area where I live, these products are bigger sellers than menstrual cups. So I'm thinking that in my part of the world at least, it might be a while before cups make a dent in the market for tampons and pads.
