In a 2020 survey of 300 people (the majority between the ages of 25 to 34) conducted by the menstrual cup manufacturer Lunette, 56 percent of respondents said they had sex during their period. The main reasons given by 44 percent of respondents for not having sex were embarrassment, worry about the mess and pain (www.lunette.com/blogs/news/lunette-s-sex-survey-what-s-not-to-love).
Lunette's survey results line up with a 2018 survey of 95,000 people in 200 countries conducted by the period tracking app, Clue. Regarding period sex, 49 percent of participants reported avoiding genital sexual activity during their period (helloclue.com/articles/sex/condom-survey).
Another 2020 survey got a much higher positive response, finding that 82(!) percent of women had sex on their period. Twenty-six percent of survey participants said they feel horny all the time on their period and 34 percent said they felt horny sometimes on their period. This survey was conducted by Intimina, a "women's health brand", and spoke to 500 people between the ages of 18 and 50 (www.forbes.com/sites/alicebroster/2020/07/10/stigma-attached-to-period-sex-may-be-a-thing-of-the-past-research-suggests/?sh=19e6e3ab745b).
Other surveys didn't come up with a percentage figure for period sex, but they did make some other interesting findings. Of the women, aged 18 to 34, who said they cancelled a date due to menstruating, 70 percent said it was because they were concerned about the possibility of having sex (Bodyform, 2018:www.bodyform.co.uk/our-world/period-sex-survey/). (As a guy, I'm not sure I knew women cancelled dates for this reason, but then if you're going to call it off because of your period, then you're probably not going to tell your date that's why you're cancelling, lol.) Thirty percent of 502 respondents to a 2016 survey by Flex, (a company that makes disposable menstrual discs that the company promotes for mess free menstrual sex) said they wanted to have more period sex (www.huffpost.com/entry/how-women-and-men-feel-about-period-sex_n_58f8ea0ee4b06b9cb914998c).
I didn't realise there are so many period sex surveys out there!
