This topic was discussed in the predecessors of this forum. Someone suggested that at any time, approximately 1 in 6 women are having their period, but I'm not sure any evidence was provided to support this estimate. According this article in the UK edition of the Huffington Post, "1 in every 7 women you encounter is on their period right now." The article was written by a guy who works for a company that produces "Clue", which is a period tracking app for mobile phones. Presumably, what he is saying is that at any time, 1 in 7 of the users of the app is having her period. How many women use the app? According to this article, in June 2016, Clue had "5 million active users in 190 countries ... Its biggest age group is teenagers between 13 and 18 years old." That sounds like a good geographic spread, but apart from the fact that teenagers are biggest group of users, there doesn't seem to be any information available about the ages of users. So it's hard to know whether the 1 in 7 figure would also apply to the general population of women who menstruate.

That's pretty fascinating and definitely believable. The different between 1 in 6 and 1 in 7 could be attributed to both the fact that women in the developed world tend to have their first period earlier than they used too, as well as the fact that there's been a major shift in demographics within just the past year trending younger. (At the end of 2016 Millennials outnumbered Baby Boomers in the adult population for the first time.) Still, I'd say the difference between 1 in 6 and 1 in 7 is pretty much within the margin of error.
