Interesting - I don't remember seeing any ads like this in the women's magazines my mother bought. Seems like the ads were run just after self adhesive pads came onto the market and their purpose was to persuade women to try them, ostensibly because they were less likely to leak than pads held in place by a sanitary belt.
Interesting too that one of the ads mentions wearing a slip - the slip has pretty much gone the way of the sanitary belt, lol.

Everyone has accidents, except me. lol
Basically I was always terrified of having an accident. I even had bad dreams about it when I first started getting periods, although I really can't remember reading anything or seeing ads about it. I think it was just from talking to very dramatic friends. "End of the world" stuff. It scared me. So I used pads and panty liners when I didn't need to, for a long time. I finally learned to trust myself. So really, there are two kinds of accidents... when you aren't prepared, and when you are prepared but the product failed. That's happened to me a couple of times. The pad gets out of position, or the tampon leaks along one side. But I am 'always' (no pun intended) prepared. I've made a bigger mess on a towel or in the bed than in my undies but those aren't accidents, exactly.
