According to a survey commissioned by the manufacturer of Bodyform period products, the reason for this is embarrassment. Other findings of the survey of 1,500 British women and people who have a monthly cycle included:

- one in five change their sheets to the darkest colour, or put extra mattress protectors on the bed
- a quarter lay down towels before sleeping, and 24% sleep in a different position
- nearly six in ten (57%) avoid sex and intimate moments while menstruating, and
- of the 47% of those with a partner who do discuss the impact their period has on their daily routines, 90% said their partner is understanding about the situation.
